Let me ask you a question. Do you have a morning routine?
Is your day going to plan?
Or are you just cruising through on autopilot?
Because I used to do just that. My wife once asked me, “what have you done today?” And I couldn’t answer. I knew I’d done something, but I didn’t feel like I’d made progress. If I asked you the same question, could you give me an answer?
Gentlemen, enough is enough!
Take back control of your day by taking control of your mornings. Want to know how? That’s the subject of today’s lesson.

I’m going to show you the 5 things you can do every morning to stop screwing up your day.
Morning Routine Tip #1. Wake Up At 5AM!
That’s right. 5AM! This part of your morning routine is the most difficult but it’s worth it.
You should wake up feeling rested, excited and ready to start your day. First-things-first, you need to go to bed at a reasonable time. Now I know I sound like your mother but getting quality sleep is essential to being productive the next day.
If you go to bed late and only get 4 or 5 hours’ sleep, you will to wake up tired and irritable. Make sure you get at least 7-8 hours’ sleep every night a night and give yourself a fighting chance!
You need to develop the habit of getting up at 5AM. You’ll struggle the first few days, or even weeks, but you will become accustomed to it. Here’s a tip. If you’re laying in bed, wondering whether to get up or not, count from 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and jump up.
Don’t even think about it.
I know it sounds crazy, but the “5 second rule” is a technique Mel Robbins pioneered. It’s a form of metacognition. And trust me, it works!
Count down: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – Get out of bed! Don’t think twice.
#2. Make Time For YOU
So I assume you got up at 5AM. Congratulations if you did! If you’re struggling (it took me a while to get into it), you need to watch my video – How To Wake Up At 5AM Daily (Even If You’re NOT A Morning Person).
At 5AM, most people are asleep. I call this the golden hour – there’s no phone calls, no children, no noise and no interruptions. This is the time of the day I spend on myself.
Step 2 of my morning routine is to get to the gym – and this is my first achievement of my day. Unfortunately, exercise is often overlooked. “I don’t have time….”, “I’m tired…”, “I’ve got stuff to do.” I’ve heard all of the excuses. But at 5AM, you’ve got plenty of time.
A good workout first-thing boosts your metabolism and makes you feel great. Did you know that a recent study showed that a burst of exercise in the morning has the same awakening effect as a cup of coffee? (I will keep drinking coffee though…)
And if that doesn’t inspire you, this will: exercising regularly leads to better pay!
After a workout, I reward myself with 15 minutes in the hot-tub. And all this before anyone else gets up!
When I get back to the house, it’s about 6.30AM. I’ve already got my clothes for the day laid out from the night before, the house is clean and my kids are still asleep.
Now it’s time for a bit of reading or meditation.
#3. Read & Meditate
You need to make reading and meditating part of your morning routine. And here’s why: at this time, your mind is awake and refreshed and your stamina is high after your gym session. It’s quiet outside too – these are the optimum conditions for absorbing information, so make the most of it.
Now is the perfect time to start learning that second language or teaching yourself a new skill. 5AM is a great time to learn.
Research suggests that the ideal time to meditate is first thing in the morning.
I’ll be honest… I wasn’t sure about meditation. But I’m always open to new things. And it really works! Meditation has been shown to reduce depression and anxiety and when we meditate, we also increase our resilience to stress.
Mediating is the perfect way to set yourself up for a challenging and productive day ahead. If you’re unsure as to how to get started, search on YouTube. There are 1000s of videos to get you started. Go ahead, you won’t regret it…
#4. Spend Time With My Wife
The best part of my morning is spending time with my wife before the working day begins.
I don’t consider this much of a morning routine because it’s something I look forward to.
Typically, we’ll sit down, have some coffee (of course!) and plan out our day. What are we going to achieve? What are we working towards?
Early morning is a great time to talk without interruption and the hustle, bustle and interruptions of daily life. My wife and I have a wonderful relationship and a great life together so I make sure this is an integral part of my day.
Life is short so don’t miss opportunities to spend time with the ones you love.
I take care of my wife (and she takes care of me!) but it’s also important to take care of myself. It’s something many men don’t do. Health related issues can be seen as a taboo subject among some guys. It can be seen as embarrassing or ‘feminine’.
Oftentimes, men let the embarrassment associated with some illnesses stop them talking to a professional. I’ll give you an example, did you know that over 52% of men experience Erectile Dysfunction? In fact, 26% of adult men under 40 experience ED. And only 25% of those affected with ED seek treatment. And all because they want to ‘sweep it under the rug’ and forget about it.
Guys – if you’re unwell, or if you’ve got something you want to talk about with someone, make sure you go and see a health professional. You have to look out for yourselves so you can look after those you love.
5) Shower, Shave & Get Ready For The Day!
Next up, I shower, shave, get dressed and I’m ready for the day!
For some men, shaving is a chore. But I actually enjoy it! No, I’m not crazy but I want you to check out my 7 tips to have the best shave of your life.
I’ve got my work morning routine down to a fine art. When I get to work, I’ve got my computer on already and it’s time to roll. Notice I haven’t even checked my phone yet? I make a point of not checking my phone until I’m at the office. If there’s a really urgent problem, someone will call me.
I’ve had a productive and rewarding morning and now it’s time to focus on my business.
But I don’t jump straight into it; I take time to plan my working day because this saves time later and stops me getting distracted and losing sight of my goals. I create a Priority Matrix so I know what needs to be done first (what’s urgent) and what can be delegated.
Most things in your day to day life are noise.
Distractions like social media notifications just aren’t important. They’ll knock you off balance; it’s very easy to lose your train of thought and lose sight of your objectives for the day. I turn my social media notifications off so I can focus on my priorities.
Before you know it, you’ve had a productive day and it’s time for home. I leave my work in the office so I can enjoy family time. My cell phone doesn’t stay in the bedroom with me, I keep it charging downstairs. I spend time with my family, read and I get to bed early because tomorrow, I’ll be doing the same thing again!
